EXT & INT – LONDON MUSEUM
Shot on location at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
Luke steals Rembrandt’s Head of Christ from his sister’s place of work at a London museum to see if it contains a hidden message. Rembrandt made over ten versions of the painting and as two versions feature in the script, (one in the museum and one aboard the wreck of the RMS Lusitania), we recreated the oil painting on both oak panels and canvas. For the gallery As well as the Rembrandt we also recreated Lucas Cranach’s The Nymph of The Fountain as oil on canvas, along with various artwork information labels and wayfinding signage.

INT – HIDEOUT
Set build shot on location at Hoxton Docks.
Luke and his team explain to Charlotte that they believe six enlightenment artworks that all portray jesus christ contain a hidden message that will lead to the location of the fountain of youth. We recreated the oil paintings El Greco’s Christ Carrying The Cross and Caravaggio’s The Taking Of Christ on both synthetic canvas for their use in stunt sequences and on linen for a material that would resemble the time period in which they were made. We created a number of paper artefacts including a ninth century Tibetan scroll as well as various stills and animations as interactive apps for monitor screens around the hideout.

EXT & INT – LONDON PUB
Shot on location at The Old Queen’s Head, Islington.
Luke researches the Vanderbilt family’s version of the Rembrandt lost after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. We added traditional frosted decals (in keeping with existing designs on the doors) to the street facing windows and French nouveau style lightboxes to the side alley windows. Luke’s book was shot as a pick up with the overall size and colour set to match a placeholder used on the initial shoot day.

EXT & INT – EXPEDITION SHIP BRIDGE
Shot on location of the rescue vessel VOS Gorgeous in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Both the exterior and interior of the bridge were recreated as a set build shot at Leavesden Studios.
Luke, Charlotte and the team travel to the wreck of the RMS Lusitania. The bridge interior featured over twenty monitor and tablet screens for which we created both stills and animations as interactive apps to represent various functions of bridge control, conning display, piloting, navigation, echo sounding, dynamic positioning, GMDSS (global maritime distress and safety system) and ECDIS (electronic chart display and information system). Revolver AV co-ordinated the on-set graphics playback.

EXT & INT – EXPEDITION SHIP COMMAND CENTER
Set build shot at Leavesden Studios.
Luke, Charlotte and the team use the command centre to salvage a section of the wreck of the RMS Lusitania and bring it to the surface. We created our own nautical charts using open source information as existing nautical charts use a variety of copyrighted data. We created our own RMS Lusitania deck plans adjusted to accommodate the specific design of the art dept set build. The command center featured over thirty monitor and tablet screens for which we created both stills and animations as interactive apps to represent various functions of the salvage such as USBL (ultra-short baseline) for underwater acoustic positioning, ADCP (acoustic doppler current profilers) for sound waves measuring current velocities through the water column, bathymetric scans for underwater topography, high picture transmission as well as scripted software such as radar. Revolver AV co-ordinated the on-set graphics playback.

EXT – VIENNA LIBRARY ENTRANCE
Shot on location at the National Library, Vienna, Austria.
Luke, Charlotte and the team visit the Vienna library to steal the 1631 King James bible or ‘wicked bible’ which contains the printing errors “thou shalt commit adultery” and “God hath shewed us his glory and his great-asse”. We created various promotional posters required for cover ups and Austrian vehicle registration plates covering private, police, fire and electric. The identity of the library, Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, was changed to our fictional identity of Wiener Renaissance Bibliothek as per the institution’s request.

INT – VIENNA LIBRARY RARE BOOK WING
Set build shot at Leavesden Studios.
We created fresco wallpaper for the rare book wing frieze, splayed arch window recesses and staircase vestibules in a baroque style complimentary to the Austrian national library location which features the cupola fresco created by Daniel Gran (1694–1757). We created over one hundred and fifty ivory style number engraved plaques for the cabinets. We also created various framed paper and book artefacts for dressing using public domain artworks to which we added some scenic paint work and or gold foiling to give them some life. An example below of the kind of public domain artwork I found, pages from the Codex De Laudibus Sanctae Crucis (Veneration of the Holy Cross) made in Salzburg (Austria) circa 815, which I thought spoke to our story and location.

Exterior shot on location at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
Interior set build shot at Langleybury Mansion, Kings Langley.
Owen looks after Thomas in a restaurant while the team steal the wicked bible from the library. For the interior we created scripted menus, wine labels as well as reproducing public domain artworks from the Vienna Secession (1897–1914) for framed prints. For the exterior we created fascia signage and banners.

Exterior shot on location the Hotel Imperial, Vienna, Austria.
Interior set build shot at Langleybury Mansion, Kings Langley.
The team escape from the Vienna library back to their hotel suite with the wicked bible to examine it for clues. The real hotel identity was approximately reproduced and applied to amenities such as bathrobes, fabric drinks coasters, food packaging, keycards, menus, stationery and toiletries. We also reproduced public domain artworks from the Vienna Secession (1897–1914) for framed prints. For the exterior we created various posters for required location cover ups.

EXT & INT – VIENNA HOTEL / THE WICKED BIBLE
Exterior shot on location the Hotel Imperial, Vienna, Austria.
Interior set build shot at Langleybury Mansion, Kings Langley.
One of the actors handling the bible was vegan so we couldn’t use and scenic age a real leather cover so in order to give an aged appearance to the fake leather we scenic painted acrylics layered and built up over the top. The script described a digit repeating pattern hidden in the bible gilding. To resolve this in visual terms I suggested a vanishing fore-edge painting so when the gilding is moved in light the painting is revealed, i.e. a bit of visual magic to help sell the idea to the audience that numbers could have been intricately painted in small detail within a hidden painting at a scale commensurate with magnifying glass from the time. The painting we suggested was Hans Memling’s Christ Surrounded by Singing and Music-Making Angels as the rest of the enlightenment artefacts are all linked by their portrayal of Christ and that the digit pattern is revealed by Thomas to be a piece of music. In addition to the wicked bible we also created various stills and animations as interactive apps for laptops and tablets as the team try to solve the hidden message.

INT – PYRAMIDS OF GIZA ENTRANCE / MUSIC CHAMBER
Set build shot at Leavesden Studios.
For the pyramid entrance frieze we created a decorative repeating star pattern and for the music chamber a hieroglyphic ceiling mural based on the Tomb of Seti ceiling. Our design was similar but not identical in order for the production dept to clear the designs as original artwork but also remain culturally sensitive. We designed the hieroglyph artwork as vectors so the printing company could produce raised and textured metallic gold elements on the wallpaper.
